Hi Karen,

We are revising the rules for 2015 to make the Facebook User Groups and the competitions more inclusive. At the end of the day, we want to see work of all sorts versus just portraiture. However, the important thing is to participate and not worry about likes. We will shape the groups by sharing versus worrying just about thumbs up.

Cheers,

Joe

I love Alien Skin, and use Exposure in every image, but on Facebook, if you are not a portrait photographer you are pretty much shut out of any competitions. I switched over to the Snap Art group, looking for more variety. Perhaps it's time for adding another exposure group that encompasses more than the big 3 (babes, brides and babies)? I'd like to see a group for non-portraits, myself. Landscapes, macros, abstract, etc.

In reply to <a href="https://exposure.software/blog/2015/photo-of-the-quarter-q4-2014/#comment-43552">Vincent Minor</a>.

Hi Vincent,

Further to Jimmy's reply, I wanted to let you know that we actually did start off the competitions with us just choosing our favourite image from the bunch. We decided to switch the rules to make it more inclusive and encourage participation and feedback from our User Groups. I think it makes sense for this to be competition where our users' tastes are taken into account in order to make it as transparent as possible. That being said, I do agree there seems to be a bit of a skew in terms of the images being shared right now, but it is up to us to shape the group by participating. With over 3,300 members in the Exposure group, I'm sure there is a much wider diaspora of images that aren't being shared that could be. The question for me is how do we change that? We're already offering pretty significant rewards for the winning images!

Interested to know your thoughts on that! Thanks again and I look forward to seeing your work in the User Group.

Cheers,

Joe

Hi Vincent,

We are slaves to our own rules, unfortunately. It's a requirement that an image have a lot of likes in order to be featured/entered into the running for the contest. You make a good point. The majority of the group seem to gravitate toward a certain type of shot. I would imagine it's based on the groups demographics. All the more reason to invite your friends. ;-)

Love using alien skin, it really helps inspire me too when I am lost and not sure which direction to take a photograph. I very much enjoy entering the contests, I'm just curious if you ever choose winners not based on likes? They are obvious photos that seem to garner more likes, bright photos, lots of natural light, beauty images. But some of my favorites are more dark or less popular in the likes, might be interesting if you guys feature some more artists that have the least amount of likes but who's photos are unique and captivating. Just food for thought!
