Having visited Iceland three weeks ago, I also recommend to pay the extra $ to rent a 4WD. Some spots in south Iceland are only accessible via a gravel roads and to see e.g. the Sólheimasandur Plane Crash site, you need to drive completely off-road.

Thanks Julie! It can be quite inexpensive, depending on the time of year. Check out Iceland Air for flights. And there are hostels and some deals on Airbnb too!
