The Exposure X3 Complete Workflow update provides powerful new functionality, including printing. In this tutorial video, you will learn the basics of printing, and preparing your images for print, using Exposure’s new print capability.
Exposure’s print dialog provides several helpful tools that make the printing process especially flexible. You can easily apply integrated watermarks and use Exposure’s ability to print a grid of images as a contact sheet. This video shows you how to set the output size of the images you’re printing, and how to adjust spacing and margins, even when printing more than one photo per page. Additionally, Exposure’s output sharpening feature helps your prints look crisp regardless of the type of paper you print on.

Good tutorial and nice new feature. I hope there will be “print presets” in future to save print settings. It’s very tedious to have to keep adjusting everything from scratch whenever you want to make a print.
Thanks for the comment, Christopher. You make a good suggestion to add a print presets capability to Exposure. I’ll make a note about your interest in this feature in our request log and we’ll get it on our radar to consider implementing in a future version.
It is great to see that you listen to feedback from the user community. I was lacking output sharpening, render intent and ICC support for print. The new print capability gives me some control like output sharpening but it was not what I was hoping for. I want it all and more important, I want to be able to “print to file” too (like in Lr). When I say “print to file” I don’t mean export. I mean apply output sharpening, render intent and apply ICC profile when I print to a file, to the screen or to a printer. Contact sheets and such is nice but I need rendering and color control much more. Especially when using print services over the Internet. Keep up the good work!
Hi Robert, thanks for the explanation. That sounds like it would be a useful feature to have. I will add notes about including a print to file option to our request log. That will ensure the design team hears about it when planning future versions of Exposure.
It would be great and I will tell you why it is crucial to me. I use a over the net print service offering pro services (short turn around but high cost). It also offer low cost services (on the same printers but with less priority). The default option is to “enhance” the uploaded jpeg-files where the back-end will do some post processing (like output sharpening, boosting colors, filling the paper etc.). But they also offer an alternative where they don’t touch the uploaded image, they just print it as is 1:1 pixel perfect. This is the perfect option as long as you know exactly what you send to the printer (just like the pro service but for 1/5 of the cost). The ICC profiles of their printers can be downloaded from their website and I use them to soft proof before I upload for print. Being able to control output sharpening, render intent and to apply ICC profiles are crucial for my workflow. It enables me to know pretty much exactly what I will get when I upload my post processed jpeg files to a print service that will not touch the jpegs, just print them. I hope you get why this is important to me and why I am holding on to Lr…
Hi Robert,
Thanks for the clarification. It’s easy to see why color management is important for your workflow. There are many applications for user-directed color management, including the preparation of photos for a printing service.
Hi Jimmy, I also appreciate the new print module and have used it. What annoyed me is, that I have to choose the “millimeters” for each print. I would like to have a setting where I can fix the unit.
But generally, the new update is a huge step forward and I think I will replace LR soon.
Thanks for the comments, Volker. You make a good point about having to manually set the printing units. I’ll add a note to our feature request log about it. That will get the design team’s attention when they’re planning the next version of Exposure.
Yes great to see print parts of Exposure developing. I am now using Exposure as I always struggled with the inconveniences of catalogue synchronisation in other software. Ref Robert Palmquist queries you can print from Exposure on win 10 to ‘MS Print to PDF’ which will print to file. Think this would help him?
Thanks for commenting, Bernard. That’s a good idea, and it could offer a possible solution. In addition to saving his photo to a file, Robert wants to include color profile information with his exported images. This is done to ensure that the colors of his photos look exactly the same on his screen as they will when they’re printed from an online printing service.
Hi Jimmy,
I am planning to step over from LR to X3. Love the speed and the presets but i have problems with printing.
1) In B&W it prints fine but on color i get only part of the image, the rest is blocked out (pure white) and it has white stripes. What can be the problem?
2) I can only select a size of A3. At the office that is the maximum size. I hope that at home i can select A2 on mij Epson printer. Is that possible or is X3 limited to A3 size?
Regards Michiel
Hi Michiel. Printing partially in color sounds like a printer driver issue. Let’s get you in contact with out support team about it. They will need more information about your computer system to help address the problem. Here is a link to where you can fill out a support ticket with that info.
No, Exposure’s printing sizes are not limited to A3. You can select from the supported print sizes for printers attached to your computer. There will be more print size options when you connect your printer at home.
Thanx Jimmy, i have reinstalled the driver and all seems to be working fine now.
And Yes, i have connected my Epson 3800 and now have the A2 option.
Waiting for the Lightroom-import tool now in EX4…..
Glad to hear it, Michiel.
Hi Jimmy,
Does the page set-up button only work when a printer is connected?
I’m trying to experiment with this in the free trial of Exposure X4, but when I click page setup it doesn’t do anything and I remain unable to choose which paper size I want to print.
Thanks a lot,
Tim
Hi Tim – If you’re not seeing any printer options, you may not have any printers configured for your machine. That is the first thing to check. Clicking Page Setup in Exposure opens the operating system’s Page Setup dialog, where all the printers you have connected to your computer are listed. The printer does not need to be connected to your computer to select from the paper and print sizes, but it will not be listed unless you have connected your computer to that printer previously.
If the printer is connected but you are not seeing printers listed, something is not working correctly. Let’s get you in contact with our support team about it. Here is a link to open a ticket.
