Good to see that you are full of ideas!
As discussed in the past, are you going to update / change the program installer?
Will it be possible to define a custom installtion path/folder?
Thanks for your comment! The installer user interface is not configured to allow alternate drive installations. However, I’ve added notes about your interest in the feature to the project log.
Sounds an excellent upgrade. Two questions:
1) You speak about “loyal supporters”, I have been a user for some years now and wonder if this will be a free upgrade for us “loyal supporters”?
2) I am thinking of upgrading my Mac Mini, what are the minimum requirements for computers?
Thanks for commenting, Andrew.
We love our loyal customers. Our mid-year releases, such as the Exposure X4.5 update in April are sent out free of charge to all owners of the current version of Exposure. Also, we will send anyone who purchases Exposure X4 on or after August 1st 2019 a free upgrade to the new version. If you already own Exposure, you can purchase Exposure X5 after its released using the discounted upgrade price.
The system requirements for Exposure X5 won’t change very much from Exposure X4. There is a new minimum RAM requirement of 8 GB minimum, but we recommend 16 GB. On the Mac, use OS X Yosemite (10.10) or newer. On a PC, use Windows 7, and An Intel Core 2 processor with SSE4 support or compatible. In either scenario use A monitor with 1280×768 resolution or greater
Thanks Jimmy, the system requirement information is very useful. :-)
Glad I could help!
Please..Conection camera in working studio..Automatic edition..and best tonality skin for raw..out lightroom..
Hi Runa,
Have you used Exposure’s monitor folder ability? That enables you to use a tethered workflow with Exposure. Check out this video to see how it works.
For skin tones, Exposure X5’s new custom camera profile features enable you to tweak the rendering of your RAW files straight out of the camera. And, the new color constraints selection tools coming in Exposure X5 will enable you to select and adjust skin tones easily.
Good, thanks..
I’ve been bugging you guys for a while about support for grayscale images, and I’m excited to see that it’s coming in X5! This will be a boon to those of us who shoot black & white film. Now we can go back to saving negative scans in grayscale. I’ve already shared the news on Twitter with my photography friends in the film shooting community (there are more of us than you might think).
Thanks for listening, and I can’t wait to try out the new version!
Glad to hear it, Lance. Thanks for sharing.
Has exposure got full, keystone correction as well as straighten and straightening of curves due to barrel distortion, using placeable guides as in Lightroom
Thanks for commenting. Yes and no. Exposure has perspective and keystone correction tools, and it has controls for correcting barrel distortion. It does not have placable guides, though.
I’ll suggest an alternative to the usual “vignette” function. Look at how Silver Efex implements a “burn edges” function with each edge having the ability to be adjusted in strength, size, and feathering (if the user so chooses). This -can- be implemented in Exposure with the gradient tool but it takes -much- longer to accomplish.
Thanks for the suggestion, Barry. We’ve logged your interest in that feature and will share it with the design team.
Wonderful. One of the greatest things of doing photography is having such a powerful and entertaining “dark room” as Exposure. Thanks very much. Hernán.
Super video Jimmy, can’t wait to dive the X5, X4 has been awesome!
Will X5 have a liquify tool?
Thanks for commenting, Tony. A liquify tool is on our radar, but it’s not going to make it into X5.
I missed the 8/1 cutoff by a little over a week, so wondering what level of discount is offered to upgrade? Also wondering if there ever will be an easy way to erase unwanted elements in a photo, i.e., content aware fill or erase; as this is about the only reason I need to leave the stand-alone app for. Thanks
Thanks for the comments! Owners of a previous version of Exposure will be eligible to purchase X5 using the discounted upgrade price when it’s available.
We’ve heard requests for content aware tools like what you mentioned, so they are already on our radar. I’ll add a few notes about your interest in those features in our logs for the design team.
Still no support for Infrared photography workflow along with the new features not very meaningful to me means that I shall stick with X4.5 and skip X5 altogether.
Thanks for the comment, Nicola! A channel mixer tool is on our list of features to add for supporting an IR workflow. Are there more IR specific tools you’d like to see?
Thank you Jimmy and sorry for the delayed response. A Channel Mixer tool is necessary to IR workflow. Its addition would be already a good start. Another necessary tool would be the ability to apply DCP profiles, especially for converted cameras that do not allow custom preset white balance in-camera. AFAIK, DCP profiles are not currently supported by Exposure X4.5, right?
No problem, Nic. Exposure X5 is the first version with DCP profile support, so that will happen soon. The Channel Mixer is on our list already, but I’ll make a few notes about your interest in it for the design team.
Thank you Jimmy! Looking forward for that to happen and when it does, you will get my money :)
I was hoping for GPU support. I love the program, workflow and results, but editing on my new MacBook Pro 15 is too slow compared to other programs (the suggested solution to disable the retina resolution is not a nice one …). Is there any news on performance enhancements?
We regard speed as vitally important, so we work on performance at every release. The development team made adjustments to speed up Exposure’s performance during startup and through the initial experience using Exposure X5.
Any chance to see GPS/Location, HEIC and Video support? I really like EX, it’s fast, simple and effective, however I hoped to see more DAM enhancements in next release. Five years and more ago, there where way more DAM solution available, altought the quantity of creating assets do grow dramatically. At the moment there is only a handful of Photography oriented DAM’s on the marked available – you name it. Serious, have a look into forums of your competitors, everywhere the users awaiting DAM functionality, but get AI for editing or subscription model to get it. However, many thanks for your great product!
Thanks for commenting, Manu. We’re working on adding the features you mentioned right now, but we don’t know if they’ll make this release. We will note your interest in our development logs and bring it to the design team’s attention.
How about performance improvements? X4 is somewhat sluggish even on pretty heavy CPUs, especially on larger (40+mp) files.
Speed as vitally important in our opinion, so we work on performance at every release. The development team made tweaks to speed up Exposure X5’s performance, specifically during startup and through the initial experience.
Upgrade printing modul, please ! (color management, printer and paper profile etc.)
Thanks for commenting, Joseph. We’re working on it, but we can’t be sure if it’s going to make this release. Keep watch here on the blog for more announcements about Exposure X5.
Sir i work with lightroom from the beginning till version 6.0. Then the change there police without a shame!!!! No more standalone versions anymore. Invest a lot in Adobe software! All my investments in the past are gone. Have Photoshop, Dreamweaver etc. Just buy Exposure 4 hope you beat Lightroom in the future. Sure you are on the way. Just hope you don’t change your police in the futher like adobe have done. I think the are a lot of people who likes a standalone version ! Great software. Just beat them !!!!
John
Thanks for commenting, John. We don’t have plans to use a subscription model or a cloud-based service. When you buy a copy of our software, you own it forever.
Great that in X5 there is the possibility to remove chromatic aberations, this was the main reason for me not to (yet) switch to Exposure. I can hardly wait to see X5 in action (and probably switch to Exposure).
I still have one request for a feature, namely that the fields of the metadata (especially filename, title and caption) automatically resize vertically to the size of the content. At the moment I find writing and reading this metadata very unpleasant because it is a relatively small field that shifts horizontally.
Adjusting the behavior of the metadata edit fields is a good suggestion, Antonie. We will share that with the design team. Thanks for commenting!
I’m looking forward to this release. I currently use X2 and have been watching upgrade progress closely. My main processing software is Lightroom 6, and since Adobe’s change to subscription only, I have been looking for a replacement. My main reason for sticking with Lightroom has been Lightroom’s print module. I’ve tried the trial version of X4, and to be honest, the print function currently offered fall way short of the flexibility offered by Lightroom. I’m really hoping that the print capabilities will be upgraded in this new release. Thanks!
Thanks for the comments, Kurt. We do have plans to further develop Exposure’s support for printing, but it’s not going to make it into Exposure X5. We’ll make note of your interest in our development logs.
I’ve been very impressed with my 30 day trial of exposure X4, to the point i think i’m going to buy version X5 when it’s released (any release dates yet?!) I was planning on buying capture one but exposure X5 has luminance masking, if it works as well as capture one does exposure could well be my software of choice to replace Adobe’s awful subscription scheme. The one concern i have is the highlight recovery slider, it seems to be the weak point of X4, has it been improved for X5?
Thanks for commenting, Chris. We haven’t set a date for the release of Exposure X5, but here on the blog is the place it will happen. We’ve heard requests for rendering tweaks to the Highlight slider. Those improvements are on our priority list, but they won’t make it into Exposure X5.
If I were to upgrade from X3 to X4 now will I get a free upgrade to X5 or should I wait for X5?
Looks like a great update, im looking forward to it!
Considering that many (most) DSLRs and MILCs nowadays support video as well as photos, in Exposure 5, can we hope to see at least some very basic support for video clips? By basic support I mean, the ability to: display of a clip’s poster frame of one’s choice (rather than just a black frame), trim, split, and export those clips. This would be a nice convenience to have alongside one’s photos rather then having to jump into some other application to do the same.
Will Fuji camera RAW be supported?
Hi there – this looks awesome. The only thing stopping me at the moment to fully switch to Exposure is the lack of Video support in the DAM. This is crucial now, since many of the Ex-Aperture (or just about still Aperture) users have been told that the move to the next OS will drop Aperture entirely. I am don’t like the subscription model and love the features of Exposure, but am more likely to stay within photos simply because of the DAM functionality. I am sure I’m not the only one who is looking for that – what are our chances? Thanks!
Very excited for Exposure x5. I saw a thread a few months ago in which someone commented asking if you would be adding LUT Export support for adobe premiere (.cube file format) – just wondering if there is the intention to include that in x5? Would be an extremely powerful addition for video work!
Hi. In the edit mode, It would be an improvement to collapse other modules that are not in use in order to focus on a module currently being used. I’ve seen this in other applications but don’t recall immediately which one. For example, if working in the ‘Basic’ module, then automatically collapse (close) the other modules which are not being used for the moment. Currently if six modules are opening one has to continually scroll up and down through the right side list of open modules and all their options. There should be an option to automatically collapse modules that are not in use for the moment. If such option does exist, my apology as I have not spotted it.
Hi Jerry – Yes, I know exactly what you mean. That functionality is built in Exposure. It’s called Solo Mode. Enabling it will only allow for a single panel to be open at a time. Simply right-click in the lower right quadrant where the panels are listed and select Solo Mode from the list. Attached is a screenshot.
Awesome! Got it!! Thanks a lot for the heads up.
Any improvement in noise management?
Thanks!
WILL IT SUPPORT tiff COLOR FILES?
IS THERE A SIZE LIMITATION (GB? – PIXEL? – iNCH?)
Thanks for commenting. There isn’t much restriction on the size of TIFF files. So, you would be able to work with up to a 25,000 by 25,000 pixel image. However, that is enormous and will likely cause any computer system to run very slow. I suggest giving the free demo a try for editing huge shots.
Well.. my images are Godzilla like: pixels 2,9000 x 32,000 (8′ X 9′); GigapixelAI only goes to 20,000 any length, I suspect I can use X5 at that step..
Currently a very proud user of Exposer X4! Would very much like to take control of my pro printers from the print module in the near future, i.e. to be manage output colors by choosing specific ICC via ColorSync like Adobe products, ON1, and even Apple Preview allow it already. That would make the software complete, because apart from that everthing is already pretty amazing! Thanks ; )
Thanks for the comments Daniel. Expanded color management during printing and exporting is something we have on our radar for a future version of Exposure. We will make note of your interest in our feature logs.
Will it be compatible with Photoshop Elements?
Not officially, no. Exposure X5 is only compatible with Photoshop Elements 15 and newer. It will require a custom install. Our support team can step you through the process, if you’re interested. Here is a link to open a ticket.
Hi, Jimmy:
I just purchased the upgrade to ExposureX5. I’m experimenting with settings to speed up the rendering while applying any effect while developing. Are there any tips you might provide to accomplish this? I’m running an iMac with the latest OS and 32 gigs of RAM. Video RAM is 8 gigs.
Thanks…
Rich
Thanks for commenting, Rich. There are a couple of bottlenecks that could cause delay when applying edits to your images. Typically any sluggishness when Exposure is first installed happens during the construction of a pre-render cache. This can take some time and will affect performance initially. It will depend on the number of images in the folders you’re accessing and the location where they are saved. After the cache is built, the performance should be much better.
Thanks, Jimmy.
Jimmy:
Saving the User Settings to an external SSD drive works wonders, too!
Rich
in how many systems can i activate exposure ??
As of now, I own the X3…
Each software license can run 2 simultaneous activations.
Hello Jimmy..
I don’t know why I haven’t used your software before as I have tried most of the others ,, I have been looking for a LR alternative / lookalike for easy transition.. Here comes the question..
I use the clone tool a lot for the work I do but find Exposure 5 a little clumsy to use with the highlighted edges to the clone areas, not great for fine detail.. Maybe I’m not using it correctly,, is there a detailed tutorial? Otherwise it fits the bill..
Thanks for commenting, Hans. We have multiple videos that talk about how to use the heal and clone tool in Exposure. Check out our Cloning with the Spot Heal Tool and our Editing Portraits videos for detailed demonstrations.
